Digital Lessons? Public Opinions on the Use of Digital Technologies in Australian Schools.

Conducted by Professor Neil Selwyn, this study is one of the first accounts of national public opinion towards digital education.

Australian classrooms are becoming increasingly digitised.

While the public is largely supportive, this trend has given rise to a number of issues and high-profile concerns. These include cyberbullying, phone bans and parental pushback on compulsory app use and device purchases.

Key findings

Based on a nationwide survey of 2052 adults, the key findings of this study are as follows: 

  • 86% strongly back schools teaching students the IT skills they need for future jobs
  • 79% support schools banning mobile phone use during class
  • 66% agree that digital technologies contribute positively to Australian schools
  • 46% want facial recognition technology added into classrooms over the next decade
  • 44% approve the adoption of online exams
  • 37% believe ‘Big Tech’ companies like Google and Microsoft can’t be trusted to lead school technology
  • 34% support the introduction of blended learning opportunities into schools
  • 21% believe that parents should pay for their child’s ‘BYOD’ device if schools don’t specify one
